Anotace: This work is one of the most significant nineteenth century treatises on ethics. It is also Schopenhauer's most extended discussion of traditional themes in ethics and presents a descriptive ethics radically at odds with rationally based, prescriptive ethical theories. Schopenhauer begins this book with a wide-ranging critique of Kant's ethics, one that anticipates the work of contemporary critics of modern moral philosophy like that of G E M Anscombe, Philippa Foot, and Richard Taylor. Schopenhauer argues that compassion is the basis of morality, and in so doing presents a virtue ethics in which passion and desire are viewed as the keys for explaining different moral characters, behaviours, and world views. In the concluding part of his essay, Schopenhauer sketches his metaphysics of morals, using Kant's transcendental idealism as a ground for stressing both the interconnectiveness of being and the affinity of his ethics to Eastern thought. Anotace: The Geography book presented a descriptive history of people and places from different regions of the world known to author's era. Although the Geography was rarely utilized in its contemporary antiquity, a multitude of copies survived throughout the Byzantine Empire. It first appeared in Western Europe in Rome as a Latin translation issued around 1469. The first Greek edition was published in 1516 in Venice. Isaac Casaubon, classical scholar and editor of Greek texts, provided the first critical edition in 1587. Although Strabo cited the antique Greek astronomers Eratosthenes and Hipparchus, acknowledging their astronomical and mathematical efforts towards geography, he claimed that a descriptive approach was more practical, such that his works were designed for statesmen who were more anthropologically than numerically concerned with the character of countries and regions. As such, the book provides a valuable source of information on the ancient world, especially when this information is corroborated by other sources. The Geography, Volume II

Anotace: The Discovery of the Future is a 1902 philosophical lecture by H. G. Wells that argues for the knowability of the future. It was originally delivered to the Royal Institution on January 24, 1902. Anotace: Konec civilizace: aneb Překrásný nový svět, v prvním překladu Konec civilisace, v originálu Brave New World, je antiutopický sci-fi román anglického autora Aldouse Huxleyho. Autor román sepsal roku 1931 a vydal v roce 1932. V češtině vyšel o rok později pod názvem Konec civilisace, ale většího zájmu se dočkal až pozdější překlad od překladatelské dvojice Josef Kostohryz a Stanislav Berounský v roce 1970. Děj románu se odehrává v Londýně v roce 2540 (632 po F. v knize), kde se objevují motivy pokroku v reprodukční medicíně, učení ve spánku a jejich dopad na společnost. Autor popisuje společnost, která uměle zvyšuje svoji spokojenost za cenu ztráty citů a emocí. Tuto společnost následně konfrontuje s člověkem, který tímto vývojem neprošel (Divoch). Myšlenky z knihy autor později doplnil a rozvinul v eseji Brave New World Revisited (1958) a ve svém posledním románu Ostrov (1962). Mortal Coils

Huxley recalls the insights he experienced, which range from the "purely aesthetic" to "sacramental vision". Anotace: Román, ve kterém velký realistický spisovatel zobrazuje anglické tovární městečko v období převratné průmyslové revoluce. S výstižnou ironií kritizuje tehdejší buržoazní společnost i anglickou aristokracii a obrací svůj hněvivý hlas proti kapitalistickému kořistnictví, politickému podvodnictví, byrokratickému vydřidušství a proti celému výchovnému systému, jímž byl anglický lid násilně udržován v nevědomosti a zaostalosti. Anotace: A Child's History of England is a book by Charles Dickens. It first appeared in serial form in Household Words, running from January 25, 1851 to December 10, 1853. Dickens also published the work in book form in three volumes: the first volume on December 20, 1851; the second, December 25, 1852; and the third, December 24, 1853. Although the volumes were published in December, each was postdated the following year. They bore the titles: Dickens dedicated the book to "My own dear children, whom I hope it may help, bye and bye, to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject". Anotace: Within two months, Sarrazin's book Deutschland schafft sich ab ("Germany Is Doing Away With Itself" or "Germany Is Abolishing Itself"), published end of August 2010, became the highest sold book on politics by a German-language author in a decade, with overall sales hitting 1.1 million copies and the first editions sold out within a matter of hours or days. In the 13th edition Sarrazin added a brief foreword commenting on the nation-wide debate his book has sparked. As of May 2011, 1.5 million copies were sold. Sarrazin advocates a restrictive immigration policy (with the exception of the highly skilled) and the reduction of state welfare benefits. There were severe reactions to his statements on economic and immigration policy in Berlin, which were published in September 2009 in Lettre International, a German cultural quarterly. Metadata a jejich hlavní schémata
Anotace: Učební materiál má přehledový charakter, zahrnuje tři základní části. První část je věnována terminologii oblasti metadat, zahrnut je výklad vzniku termínu „metadata“, problematiky definování tohoto termínu i typologie metadat, představena je úloha metadat v životním cyklu informačních zdrojů včetně jejich schémat a struktur. Druhá část podává přehled vybraných hlavních metadatových schémat v jejich vývoji a aktuálním stavu (Dublin Core, hlavičky TEI, MARCXML, MODS a MADS) Třetí část je věnována dvěma kontejnerovým strukturám pro komunikaci a archivaci metadat (RDF a METS). Výklady metadatových schémat a kontejnerových rámců (struktur) pro metadata jsou doprovázeny příklady metadatových záznamů převzatých z vybraných digitálních archivů a jiných elektronických databází. Anotace: Následující příspěvek v první části představuje problematiku informačních materiálů, které jsou šířeny v prostředí WWW zdarma. Definován je termín „otevřený přístup“, představeny jsou hlavní typy zdrojů s volně dostupnými informačními materiály a také instituce a iniciativy, které otevřený přístup k informacím podporují. Hlavní část příspěvku je věnována stručnému rozboru a hodnocení významných vlastností hlavních citačních služeb, které zpracovávají volně dostupné materiály uložené ve volně dostupných digitálních knihovnách nebo elektronických archivech a také a citace v nich obsažené. Příspěvek vychází z dostupné literatury, zejména pak ze zprávy britských odborníků z roku 2005, aktuální informace byly získány prostřednictvím online rozhraní jednotlivých citačních systémů. Anotace: Učební text zahrnuje stručný přehled hlavních trvalých identifikátorů informačních entit, užívaných globálně v soudobých informačních systémech. Ve dvou jádrových kapitolách jsou představeny jednak trvalé mezinárodní standardní identifikátory, jednak další trvalé identifikátory užívané především v oblasti online dostupných digitálních zdrojů. Prezentované mezinárodní standardní identifikátory jsou uspořádány do skupin v souladu s modelem FRBR (informace navazují a doplňují publikovaný model IFLA). Text i obrazová informace prezentují formující se komplexní světovou síť trvalých identifikátorů. Informace zahrnuté ve stručných charakteristikách identifikátorů pocházejí buď z mezinárodních norem nebo internetových standardů RFC, nebo z dalších veřejně dostupných zdrojů včetně WWW prezentací příslušných registračních a jiných systémů. Anotace: Inferno is an autobiographical novel by August Strindberg. Written in French in 1896-97 at the height of Strindberg's troubles with both censors and women, the book is concerned with Strindberg's life both in and after he lived in Paris, and explores his various obsessions, including alchemy, occultism, and Swedenborgianism, and shows signs of paranoia and neuroticism. Inferno has often been cited as proof of Strindberg's own personal neuroses, such as a persecution complex, but evidence also suggests that Strindberg, although experiencing mild neurotic symptoms, both invented and exaggerated much of the material in the book for dramatic effect.
