Filozofický úvod do moderní logiky
Anotace: Kniha nabízí netradiční úvod do světa moderní logiky. Předkládá čtenáři řadu filozofických otázek, které se týkají východisek a cílů logických teorií a jejich formálních aparátů. Krok za krokem pak ukazuje, jak je logika geneticky spjata s přirozeným jazykem a jak se obrysy běžných i méně běžných logických systémů vynořují z reflexe toho, jak běžně odůvodňujeme svá tvrzení. Nabízí tak alternativu k rozšířené představě, podle níž je smyslem logiky zachycení nějakých velice abstraktních a velice fundamentálních zákonů, které vymezují pole působnosti rozumu. Čtenářsky přístupným, ale netriviálním způsobem otevírá cestu k pochopení klíčových pojmů i metod tzv. klasické logiky i nejvýznamnějších systémů neklasických logik. The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers
Anotace: Very little is known about Diogenes Laertius, despite the fact he wrote some of the most influential accounts of the lives of the West’s best known philosophers. His mention of Sextus Empiricus means he lived after the 3rd century A.D., while Sopater quoted him in the 6th century. For that reason, historians believe he lived in the middle of the 4th century. In the ancient manuscripts of his work, he is invariably referred to as "Laertius Diogenes," thus giving the author his name. It’s unclear what the origin of his name is either, but his Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers was written in Greek and professes to give an account of the lives and sayings of the Greek philosophers. The Lives has been one of the chief accounts of the philosophers’ lives, partly because other documents no longer exist, leaving Laertius as one of the few comprehensive accounts available. Even still, it’s not clear that Laertius’ entire work survived the Middle Ages; 14th century discussions of his work suggest there was a lot more than currently exists today. Navíc musel stále zápasit s domácí opozicí katolicky smýšlejícího panstva a s nároky církve. Šestý díl epopeje končí smrtí Jiřího z Poděbrad. V prostředí boje a intrik postupně umírají příslušníci i druhé generace rodu Prokopů a na jejich místo nastupují děti a vnuci. Jejich svět však už není naplněn původními ideály kališnického hnutí, ale pragmatickým zápasem o majetek a postavení. V mnoha případech však také úsilím o prosté lidské štěstí. Anotace: Timothy Snyder presents the often overlooked life and thought of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz, an important Polish intellectual at the beginning of this century, and thereby opens a new path in the understanding of modern nationalism and twentieth-century socialism. During his brief life in Poland, Paris, and Vienna, Kelles-Krauz influenced or infuriated most of the leaders of the various socialist movements of Central Europe and France. His central ideas ultimately were not accepted by the socialist mainstream at the time of his death. However, ninety years later, we see that his theories anticipated late twentieth-century thought on the importance of nationalism as a social force and the parameters of socialism in political theory and praxis. Kelles-Krauz was one of the only theoreticians of his age to advocate Jewish and Ukrainian national rights as being equivalent to, for example, Polish national rights, and he correctly foresaw the struggle for national sovereignty as being central to future events in Europe. Svazek nazvaný Trafalgar aneb anatomie námořní bitvy bude mít rozsah 496 stran a mnoho černobílých ilustrací (dobové malby, portréty, mapky, schémata). Námětem je bitva u španělského mysu Trafalgar, svedená 21. října 1805 mezi 33 řadovými loďmi francouzsko-španělské floty admirála Villeneuva a 27 britskými řadovými loďmi admirála Nelsona, který zde padnul. Jedná se o jeden z největších a nejproslulejších námořních střetů v dějinách. Dílo si skutečně zaslouží podtitul Anatomie námořní bitvy. Líčí Trafalgar na základě vyprávění mnoha očitých svědků od admirálů a kapitánů po prosté členy posádek všech zúčastněných národností. Přibližuje i zásady bojové taktiky plachetních lodí, manévrů, dělostřelby a plavby samotné. Popisuje vše, co bitvě předcházelo od úniku spojeneckého loďstva přes složitou plavbu do Karibiku a zpět, střet u mysu Finisterre až po tečku za Trafalgarem, bitvu u mysu Ortegal.
