Od konce 19. století se Máchovy autobiografické texty stávají organickou součástí jeho vydávaného díla. Problémem zůstával deník na rok 1835, částečně psaný v šifrách, popisující většinou Máchův intimní vztah se snoubenkou Lori Šomkovou. Deník dešifroval na základě úplného textu ve 20. letech K. Janský s ohledem na Máchovu pověst dešifraci nezveřejňoval. Publikace nově přináší úplnou dešifraci deníku na rok 1835, založenou na původním prameni a odstraňující chyby v dosavadní dešifraci. Výrazná pozornost je věnována také dosud opomíjené Máchově snoubence Lori Šomkové, čtenář se zde seznámí s jejími životními osudy po Máchově náhlé smrti.
