Pro mě jako čtenáře byly asi nejhorší chemické a geologické kapitoly, ve kterých jsem se úspěšně ztrácel a v podstatě jen polykal chemické a geologické výrazivo bez kýženého "aha" efektu. Anotace: Tematická šířka a hloubka autorových esejů vychází z jeho mnohostranných zájmů a bohaté zkušenosti profesní i životní jako klinického psychologa (a sexuologa) i teoretika umění a filmu. Tato dvojdomost profesí a zájmů vychází ze společné pracovní metody, psychoanalýzy (zejména freudismu). Mnohostrannost se projevuje v jeho textech překračováním jednotlivých oborů a syntetickým, obecně lidským přístupem. Přesto můžeme odlišit zhruba čtyři esejistické okruhy. Tím prvním je psychosomatika a vyrovnávání se s onemocněním tělesným i psychickým. Zde mj. vynikají autorovy úvahy o významu tváře pro lidskou identitu a možnost komunikace, které vytěžil ze své praxe na klinice popálenin. Další oblast tvoří eseje o literatuře a výtvarném umění ve vztahu k rozmanitým psychologickým a sociálním jevům. Čtenář se tak setká např. s Flaubertovou paní Bovaryovou, Zolovou Nanou či Donem Juanem nebo s rozborem erotiky v dílech moderních malířů. Třetí okruh se věnuje takzvané vědecké psychologii, respektive její schopnosti postihnout duši a duševní procesy, a mezím psychologického poznání. Brežněv a jeho éra v Kremlu
Anotace: Jméno Leonid Brežněv zná v České republice skoro každý, včetně těch, kteří se narodili nebo vyrůstali po listopadu 1989. Anotace: Zbabělci, román napsaný již v roce 1948, vydaný však až o deset let později, jsou Škvoreckého prvotinou a obsahují řadu autobiografických prvků. Děj se odehrává ve východočeském městě Náchod (v knize zmiňováno jako Kostelec), v jediném týdnu na samém konci druhé světové války. Každý den hlavního hrdiny Dannyho Smiřického je vylíčen jako samostatná kapitola. Danny je ve svých soudech okolí a prostředí malého města velmi otevřený a mladicky kritický, svou otevřenost neomezuje ani v otázkách tabuizovaných jako jsou sex, postavení mladé generace nebo úvahy mezi řádky na téma: měli bychom tu radši Angličany, nebo Rusy? V románu jsou zdařile vykresleny životní pocity mladé generace, její revolta proti pokrytectví generace otců. Danny má zdravou naivitu mládí, odpor k jakémukoli patosu, občas se zdá být cynický, ale přitom cítíme, že je lidský, tolerantní a pln soucitu k těm, kteří si to zasluhují. Jazyk knihy, slang mladých lidí, živé dialogy a prokládání češtiny němčinou a angličtinou – to vše také přispělo k výrazné plastičnosti a přesvědčivosti postav, přestože se jejich životní obzor nezdá nijak zvlášť široký – jejich nejvyššími životními hodnotami jsou jazz a kontakty s druhým pohlavím. Po mezinárodním úspěchu knihy Petit Traité des grandes vertus, 1995 (Malá kniha o velkých ctnostech) se rozhodl věnovat výlučně spisovatelské a přednáškové činnosti. Je častým přispěvatelem předních listů jako Le Monde, Libération či Le Nouvel Observateur i hostem francouzských televizních pořadů. Rovněž pořádá přednášky pro soukromé firmy i odborové organizace. Osm let byl členem Národního poradního výboru pro etiku (Comité consultatif national d’étique), kromě toho je též čestným členem Společnosti na obranu práva na důstojnou smrt (Association pour le droit de mourir dans la dignité). Kromě své pedagogické a popularizační činnosti je Comte-Sponville autorem desítek knih převážně na témata z etiky a sociální filosofie. Jednou z nejpopulárnějších je Duch ateismu (L’esprit de l’athéisme. Introduction a une spiritualité sans Dieu) z roku 2006. V této knize vypracoval Comte-Sponville nejpodrobněji svou koncepci ateismu, který je slučitelný se spirituálním životem. Tato varianta ateismu kontrastuje s u nás známějším tzv. novým ateismem anglosaských autorů, jako jsou Richard Dawkins nebo Christopher Hitchens. Henlein - vůdce sudetských Němců

Anotace: Konrad Henlein (1898–1945), rodák z Vratislavic nad Nisou, patří mezi osobnosti, které se navždy výrazně zapsaly do moderních českých, respektive československých dějin. Ovšem mezi ty, jejichž „zapsání“ se konalo s fatálně negativním dopadem. Voják v první světové válce, bankovní úředník, cvičitel Německého turnerského svazu, předák Sudetoněmecké vlastenecké fronty a později Sudetoněmecké strany, v letech 1938–1945 přední činitel „sudetoněmecké župy“ jako součásti Německé říše… Autor podrobně líčí Henleinův osobní a rodinný život, jeho charakterové vlastnosti, politickou kariéru i konec v zajateckém táboře v Plzni.
