Anotace: A book by Alpheus Spring Packard, LL.D. who was an American entomologist and palaeontologist. He was the son of Alpheus Spring Packard (1798 -1884) and the brother of William Alfred Packard. He was born in Brunswick, Maine and was Professor of Zoology and Geology at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island from 1878 until his death. He was a vocal proponent of the Neo-Lamarckian theory of evolution. His chief work was the classification and anatomy of arthropod animals, and contributions to economic entomology, zoögeography, and the phylogeny and metamorphoses of insects. Anotace: Dialog mezi Sokratem a jeho žákem Faidrem v prostředí athénského venkova, kam se oba vydají na procházku a ve stínu olivovníku přemýšlejí nad posmrtným osudem duše. Platón, autor dialogu, představuje duši jako vozataje, kterým je rozum, nejlepší část duše. Ta se musí vyrovnat se žádostivostí, která ji táhne k zemi, a s pomocí lepší části duše - statečností, se může znovu vrátit do své původní domoviny, světa idejí. Kniha je hodně náročná na abstraktní myšlení, ale nabízí půvabný básnický jazyk. Navíc překlad Platóna z pera Františka Novotného je považován obecně za nejlepší. Euthyfrón

Jeho filosofické myšlení zásadně ovlivnil spis A. Schopenhauera Svět jako vůle a představa. Oba tyto vlivy, filologický a filosofický, se potkávají v Nietzscheho knižní prvotině Zrození tragédie z ducha hudby ještě se třetím: jeho obdivem a přátelstvím k R. Wagnerovi. Lidský život, píše Nietzsche, inspirován Schopenhauerovou metafyzikou pravůle, je bytostně ohrožen, plný bolesti, úzkosti a beznaděje. Tím, co má člověku pomoci snášet jeho osud, je umění. Ve starověkém Řecku pak Nietzsche nachází pojmenování dvou základních principů v umění působících: princip apollinský, jehož úkolem je tragickou skutečnost lživě zkrášlovat a harmonizovat, a tak poskytnout smrtelníkům požitek estetické slasti dovolující zapomenout, a princip dionýský, původnější a hlubší, výraz nespoutanosti a opojení, v němž se mísí hrůza, bolest i titánský vzdor. Anotace: Nejslavnější kniha Martina Bubera, Já a Ty z roku 1923, je jedinečným příspěvkem k filozofii dialogu. Buber zde rozlišuje dvě základní nastavení, jež charakterizuje výrazy „Já–Ty“ a „Já–Ono“. The work as a whole produced a profound impression, and it is certainly Schiller's masterpiece in dramatic literature. He brings out with extraordinary vividness the ascendency of Wallenstein over the wild troops whom he has gathered around him, and at the same time we are made to see how the mighty general's schemes must necessarily end in ruin, not merely because a plot against him is skilfully prepared by vigilant enemies, but because he himself is lulled into a sense of security by superstitious belief in his supposed destiny as revealed to him by the stars. Wallenstein is the most subtle and complex of Schiller's dramatic conceptions, and it taxes the powers of the greatest actors to present an adequate rendering of the motives which explain his strange and dark career. The love-story of Max Piccolomini and Thekla is in its own way not less impressive than the story of Wallenstein with which it is interwoven.
