Anotace:

In The War with Hannibal, Livy chronicles the events of the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage, until the Battle of Zama in 202 BC. He vividly recreates the immense armies of Hannibal, complete with elephants, crossing the Alps; the panic as they approached the gates of Rome; and the decimation of the Roman army at the Battle of Lake Trasimene. Yet it is also the clash of personalities that fascinates Livy, from great debates in the Senate to the historic meeting between Scipio and Hannibal before the decisive battle. Livy never hesitates to introduce both intense drama and moral lessons into his work, and here he brings a turbulent episode in history powerfully to life.

Anotace:

An epic endeavor by a man genuinely enamored of his native Rome, Livy's "The History of Rome" was originally written in 142 books spanning the entire history of the Roman people up to Livy's day in the time of Augustus in the first century BC. While this Roman historian's monumental undertaking took most of his life, only 35 books still survive today. Livy begins with Aeneas' landing on Italy and the myth of Romulus and Remus' founding of Rome. He also thoroughly covers numerous wars, such as the Samnite Wars, the Punic Wars, and the Social War, as well as all of the rulers of Rome, including Julius Caesar, Nero, and Augustus. Though the work is a bit biased, its countless references to other sources are a testament of Livy's attempt to create an accurate, understandable history of the Roman Kingdom, and, later, the Republic. Simultaneously a glorification of Rome and a passionate warning to future Romans, "Ab Urbe Condita" reflects the magnificence and ignominy, the opinions and interests, and the myths and political realities of one of history's most remarkable civilizations. In this volume you will find books IX-XXVI of Livy's "Histories".

Knižní žánr: historie

Anotace:

Drobný spis O starobylosti Židů je de facto první historickou polemikou proti římské nadvládě, a Flavius Iosephus jím reagoval na hojné projevy nenávisti vůči Židům, šířené zejména v dobové historické a filozofické literatuře. Adresoval jej svému staršímu současníkovi Apiónovi z Alexandrie, známému svým antijudaismem, a hájil v něm židovský národ z hlediska starobylého původu, zejména náboženství, zákonodárství a mravů, a demonstroval přednosti židovské kultury a způsobu života.

Knižní žánr: historie

Anotace:

Julius Caesar was one of the most ambitious and successful politicians of the late Roman Republic and his short but bloody conquest of the Celtic tribes led to the establishment of the Roman province of Gaul (modern France).
Caesar's commentaries on his Gallic Wars provide us with the most detailed surviving eye-witness account of a campaign from antiquity. Kate Gilliver makes use of this account and other surviving evidence to consider the importance of the Gallic Wars in the context of the collapse of the Roman Republic and its slide toward civil war.

Work concerning the Egyptian campaign engaged in by the great Roman statesman Julius Caesar (100-44 BCE), but not written by him. "The Alexandrian War, " which deals with troubles elsewhere also, may have been written by Aulus Hirtius (ca. 90-43 BC, friend and military subordinate of Caesar), who is generally regarded as the author of the last book of Caesar's "Gallic War."
