Tento způsob komunikace byl dlouhou dobu považován za strnulý ceremoniál či za prázdný rituál, a zůstal proto stranou zájmu. Nová učebnice posunuje výklad do poloviny 18. století, aby se tak hospodářské, sociální, politické, právní a kulturní změny protnuly s podmínkami a vlastním průběhem klíčového období – industrializace. Anotace: Kniha renomovaného cambridgeského historika, předního představitele vlny "nové historie", se zabývá změnami statutu vědění a poznání v raně moderní době. Vychází nejen ze sociologických tendencí v americké historii vědy, ale především z přístupů ovlivněných podstatnými změnami v teorii a historii vědeckého poznání v průběhu 60. let 20. století (Claude Lévi-Strauss, Thomas Kuhn, Michel Foucault, Peter Berger a Thomas Luckmann) - objev "konkrétního myšlení", diskursivní a institucionální povaha vědění, struktura vědeckých "revolucí", realita jako "sociální konstrukt", dále ze sociální antropologie Émile Durkheima, ze sociologie Karla Mannheima. Navazuje též na novější teorie ("kulturní kapitál" aj. Pierra Bourdieua) nebo dějiny pravdy jako společenského konstruktu (Steven Shapin). Burke si všímá proměn tradičních kategorií vědění - "umění" (ars) a věda (scientia) - a ukazuje, že v moderní době nešlo jednoduše o kumulativní růst poznání a vědění, nýbrž o spojení pokroku a regresu v jednotlivých sférách vědění. Zabývá se vztahy alternativního a oficiálního vědění, zkoumá vztahy nového vědeckého poznání k démonologii, čarodějnictví a podobně. Všímá si také interakce mezi teoretickým poznáním učenců a praktickými znalostmi řemeslníků. Obraz "plurality vědění" v knize dotvářejí odkazy k ústně tradovaným vědomostem, teoreticky nezpracovaným oblastem vědění (vaření, lov atd.), muzejním sbírkám, encyklopedickým projektům atd. Jednotlivé kapitoly se soustřeďují na sociologii, geografii a antropologii vědění, dále na jeho politické a ekonomické aspekty, úlohu čtenáře a otázky důvěryhodnosti vědeckého poznání... Radek Fukala

Anotace: Günter Grass předložil na prahu osmdesátky autobiografii, která je — jak u tohoto rozeného fabulátora není ani jinak představitelné — umělecky komponována a stylizována a neustále osciluje na hranici autentického dokumentu a fikce, dokládajíc i otevřeně přiznávajíc, že každé vzpomínání je i při nejupřímnější snaze o pravdivost vždy tvorbou příběhu a postav, nikoli jejich pouhou „věrnou“ reprodukcí. Autor tu revokuje skutečné události, lidi a zážitky, z nichž většina později vstupovala do jeho uměleckých textů (především „gdaňské trilogie“: Plechového bubínku, Kočky a myši, Psích roků), jako by obracel směr uměleckého procesu: jestliže dříve proměňoval životní materii na umělecký tvar, nyní se zpětně — a s přiznanou nejistotou na každém kroku — snaží rekonstruovat životní a historickou realitu, z níž jeho umělecké příběhy a postavy vznikaly. Výsledkem tohoto pokusu je ovšem zase výsostně umělecké dílo, poutavé vyprávění s výraznými postavami, pointovanými příběhy a grassovsky hravým stylem, ale současně i dílo jako vážné, upřímné a reflektované svědectví o době a společnosti, v níž autor žil. Tyto hodnoty díla byly bezprostředně po vydání překryty vzrušenými diskusemi, jež se soustředily na jediný bod celé knihy: na Grassovo pozdní přiznání, že jednotka, do níž byl jako dobrovolník na sklonku války přidělen, patřila k divizi SS. Nezaujatý čtenář se přesvědčí, že to není zdaleka jediný důvod, proč toto pozdní dílo velkého autora číst. Fareed Zakaria
