Review:
MORGION's untimely disappearance after the release of 'Solinari' left a noticeable hole in the Death-Doom sphere. And while a slew of other bands have come since then, their presence has always been missed. As time dwindled by, however, it became unlikely that they would return to the scene and one couldn't help but wonder whether or not they would still be able to recapture the same essence found on their previous albums after such a long hiatus.
Finally, concrete answers came from Dark Symphonies and 'Cloaked By Ages, Crowned In Earth' was announced and time has done little to hamper the band's creativity. The album is nothing short of a mesmerizing combination of melodic, atmospheric passages coupled with slow, rumbling Doom laden guitars. The vocals share similar characteristics, ranging from mournful chants to reverberating Death growls exploring all facets of sorrow and despair.
Ebb Tide (Parts I & II) is perhaps MORGION's finest attempt at crafting a sing that merges both elements in their sound. Commencing with a soft, almost trance-like guitar line, the track continues in a similar vein with captivating vocals, before reaching its apex some few minutes later in a torrent of distorted guitars and menacing growls.
The album is drenched with atmosphere, which is highlighted in the intro 'Cloaked By Ages' as well as the short, but effective 'Trillium Rune'. While those tracks seem to serve the sole purpose of adding atmosphere, there isn’t a single track devoid of it, while encompassing myriad other elements.
Is 'Cloaked By Ages, Crowned In Earth' as good as 'Solinari'? Well, more time will be needed to answer that question accurately, but it is good to finally have MORGION back. If the new MY DYING BRIDE was somewhat of a disappointment for you, then perhaps MORGION will satisfy you Doom related needs.
