Evropský císař
Anotace: Karel IV. (1316–1378) byl králem a císařem v době, kdy se křesťanství ocitlo v krizi a Evropou zmítaly mor, stoletá válka a počátky papežského schizmatu. Jako příslušník lucemburské dynastie se narodil v Praze, vyrůstal v Paříži, své první panovnické kroky podnikl v Itálii, stal se římským, českým, langobardským i arelatským králem a nakonec římským císařem. Pierre Monnet (* 1963), který vede Francouzsko-německý institut historických a společenských věd ve Frankfurtu nad Mohanem a je specialistou na politické a sociální dějiny pozdního středověku, vidí Karla IV. rozkročeného mezi středověkem a modernou a problematizuje v českém prostředí mnohdy idealizovaný pohled na Otce vlasti, když akcentuje jeho strategické kroky při rozšiřování území a připomíná neúspěchy jeho potomků. Anotace: Protestantská etika a duch kapitalismu je patrně nejznámějším a zároveň k nejdiskutovanějším Weberovým dílem. Weber ho publikoval v letech 1904–1905. Zamýšlí se v něm nad počátky a příčinami vzniku kapitalismu, resp. nad souvislostmi mezi rozvojem kapitalismu, náboženskými systémy, racionalismem a byrokratizací státu. Vcelku jednoznačně zde spojuje vznik kapitalismu s protestantským náboženstvím, s protestantskou kulturou a s protestantskou etikou práce, vykazující prvky askeze, šetrnosti a střídmosti. Důraz přitom klade na protestantský smysl pro zisk, jenž se podle jeho názoru liší od ekonomického myšlení katolíků, kteří vykazují větší sklony k humanismu, zároveň však i k mysticismu. V rovině náboženské senzibility stejně jako v rovině věroučně podmíněné mentality vidí základní rozdíly ve vzniku a možnostech rozvoje principů kapitalismu v protestantském a katolickém prostředí, resp. v prostředí křesťanských a nekřesťanských civilizací a společností. Anotace: Horký pruh země u Středozemního moře byl již od starověku svědkem mnoha dramatických zvratů, které hýbaly celým světem. A po celou dobu existovala touha židovského národa po vlastní zemi, která vyvrcholila v sionistickém hnutí 19. století a roku 1948 založením státu Izrael. Ten se okamžitě musel vypořádat s vojenským útokem okolních států i svými vlastními temnými stránkami. Ani dějiny moderního Izraele však nejsou jen dějinami válek. Už jen samotné budování vlastního státu bylo z historického hlediska jedinečné a stejně tak izraelská politika i kultura nemá vzhledem ke specifičnosti této země nikde obdoby.Kniha čtenáře krátce seznámí se situací, která ve 20. století postupně vedla ke vzniku státu, aby poté plnou pozornost věnovala období po roce 1948 až do současnosti. Izraelské dějiny jsou vykládány z politicky neutrálního pohledu a prostor je dán i "druhé straně" - arabským obyvatelům země. Autor je jedním z největších českých odborníků na problematiku Izraele a Palestiny. Elizabeth C. Economy
Svět podle Číny
Anotace: Jako ekonomická a vojenská supervelmoc, ve které žije na 20 procent světové populace, má Čína potenciál přetvořit celý stávající systém mezinárodních vztahů. Že se o to pokusí ostatně naznačují i prohlášení prezidenta Si Ťin-pchinga, podle kterých musí Čína „stát v čele reformy globálního uspořádání“. Jenže jak by taková změna vypadala? A co by znamenala pro zbytek světa? Profesorka Elizabeth Economy v této fascinující knize popisuje ambiciózní snahu Číny o znovuzískání staré slávy a dramatické překreslení geostrategického prostoru. V Si Ťin-pchingově vizi blízké budoucnosti hraje komunistická velmoc dominantní úlohu na světové scéně a definitivně se jí podařilo ovládnout Hong Kong, Tchaj-wan i celé jihočínské moře. Prostřednictvím obří iniciativy Nové hedvábné stezky také zásadně zvýšila svůj politický, hospodářský i bezpečnostní dosah a využila svého vlivu v OSN a dalších institucí k tomu, aby přetvořila mezinárodní normy a hodnoty k čínskému obrazu – zejména pak ve vztahu k lidským právům. Není pochyb o tom, že by se Svět podle Číny výrazně lišil od toho současného. Naštěstí je tu ale tato kniha, která přináší unikátní příležitost pochopit velká rizika i potenciální příležitosti, které s sebou globální vzestup komunistické Číny přináší. Přednášky na Harvardově univerzitě z roku 1993
Anotace: V letech 1992 a 1993 Umberta Eca pozvali na Harvardovu univerzitu na šest přednášek o literární teorii. Čekal-li tehdy některý student suchopárný výklad, pamatuje si své překvapení pravděpodobně dodnes. Beletristický text je v Ecově podání lesem, v němž může čtenář rozjímat, nebo se ztratit, chodit po prochozených cestách, nebo si vyšlapat svou vlastní. Eco vyzývá čtenáře, aby se znovu zamysleli nad tím, jak čtou a co od nich text očekává. Na nesčetných příkladech od Tří mušketýrů přes romány o Jamesi Bondovi až po současné detektivky (či porno) ilustruje literární techniky, kterými texty dosahují svých cílů, roli, kterou v nich hraje čas, či míru, do jaké fikce parazituje na realitě a naopak.
